Why Quality Inspection Matters
A rubber seal that fails in the field can cost thousands in warranty claims, field service, and customer reputation. Catching defects at the source — during production and delivery — is always cheaper than dealing with failures downstream.
Inspection Levels & Standards
| Standard | Description |
| ISO 2859 | Sampling procedures for inspection by attributes (go/no-go inspection) |
| ISO 3951 | Sampling procedures for variables (measurement-based inspection) |
| ASTM D2000 | Standard classification system for rubber materials |
| ASTM D1414 | Testing methods for O-rings (compression, tension, hardness) |
| ISO 3303 | Determination of tear strength for rubber |
Dimensional Inspection
- CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine): For complex 3D parts — measures all critical dimensions against CAD model
- Optical profile projector: For 2D cross-section verification against drawing
- Micrometer / caliper: For simple dimensional checks — 0.01mm resolution minimum
- Optical comparator: For O-ring and circular seal cross-section verification
Typical Acceptance Criteria
| Property | Test Method | Typical Acceptable Range |
| Cross-section diameter (O-ring) | Optical comparator / micrometer | ±0.05 to ±0.10mm per drawing |
| Inside diameter (O-ring) | Optical comparator | ±0.15 to ±0.30mm per drawing |
| Hardness (Shore A) | Durometer (ASTM D2240) | ±5 Shore A of target |
| Visual appearance | Visual (2.0 lux illumination) | No bubbles, no contamination, no flash >0.3mm |
| Weight | Precision scale | ±5% of target weight |
Material Testing
- Hardness (Shore A): Three measurements, averaged, per ASTM D2240
- Tensile strength & elongation: ASTM D412, on die-cut test specimens
- Compression set: ASTM D395 Method B, 22 hours at 70°C or specified temp
- Specific gravity: ASTM D297, for material identification
- Chemical resistance (optional): ASTM D471 — mass change after 72h in specified fluid
Appearance Criteria
- No voids or bubbles: Any internal void visible under 10x magnification is reject
- No flash above: 0.3mm on sealing surfaces (0.5mm on non-sealing)
- No contamination: No metal chips, dust, or foreign material embedded in surface
- No dimensional flash on O.D. or I.D.: Must not interfere with assembly
- Color uniformity: Must match approved standard sample
How to Set Your Inspection Plan
- AQL (Acceptable Quality Level): Standard is AQL 1.0 for critical seals, AQL 2.5 for non-critical parts
- Sample size: Per ISO 2859-1 tables — for batch of 5000, AQL 1.0 = sample 125, accept/reject = 3/4
- Critical dimensions: 100% inspection required — not acceptable to sample
- Traceability: Each batch should have: production date, material batch number, inspection results, operator name
