Pumps and valves move the fluids that keep industry running, and the elastomer seal is usually the first component to fail. Pump and valve seal selection is a balance of chemical compatibility, temperature, pressure, and—critically—whether the seal is static or dynamic. This guide walks through the common seal types and how to pick the right compound, with links to our rubber seals and diaphragms pages.
| Fluid | Best Elastomer | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Water / steam | EPDM | Up to ~150°C; avoids NBR swelling |
| Oil / fuel / hydraulic | NBR, FKM | FKM for higher temp & aromatics |
| Acids / solvents | FKM, FFKM | FFKM for the most aggressive |
| Food / pharma | Silicone, EPDM | FDA/3-A grades |
| Abrasive slurries | UHMW-lined / FKM | Hardness & profile matter |
Base your choice on our o-ring material selection guide and EPDM vs NBR vs FKM comparison.
Static seals mainly need compression-set resistance; dynamic seals (shafts, plungers, diaphragms) also need low friction, low wear, and sometimes lubrication compatibility. A compound that is fine statically can fail quickly in motion—factor in surface finish and lubrication from the process fluid.
