Rubber Diaphragms: Flat, Convoluted & Reinforced Seals

Rubber diaphragms are flexible seals that transmit force between fluids and mechanical elements without leakage—the heart of pumps, valves, actuators, and pressure sensors. At Anlintech we fabricate flat, convoluted, and rolling diaphragms in NBR, EPDM, silicone, FKM, and HNBR, often with fabric or metal reinforcement, to your actuation stroke and pressure rating. See how they fit our broader molded rubber components program.

Diaphragm Construction Types

  • Flat (single-ply) diaphragms – simple sealing discs for low-stroke pumps and dampers.
  • Convoluted (rolling) diaphragms – allow large, low-friction strokes for actuators and accumulators.
  • Reinforced diaphragms – nylon, polyester, or aramid cloth insertion for burst strength and stroke control.
  • Bonded diaphragms – rubber chemically or mechanically locked to a metal washer or plate.
  • Welded / solventless seals – for food and medical where adhesion is restricted.

Material Selection

Material Best For Temp Range
NBR (Buna-N) Fuel, oil, pneumatic, general -40°C to +120°C
EPDM Steam, water, weather, brake fluid -50°C to +150°C
Silicone Food, medical, high temp -60°C to +230°C
FKM / Viton® Chemical, fuel, heat -20°C to +205°C
HNBR Automotive, sour-gas, dynamic -40°C to +150°C

We validate compounds against ASTM and ISO methods and can supply material traceability and inspection reports on request.

How to Specify a Diaphragm

  1. Stroke length and maximum pressure (static & dynamic).
  2. Media in contact with each side (oil, water, gas, chemical).
  3. Reinforcement and bonding requirements.
  4. Dynamic life (cycles) and temperature envelope.
  5. Regulatory needs (FDA, USP Class VI, NSF).

For dynamic-life and material trade-offs, see our o-ring material selection guide and EPDM vs NBR vs FKM comparison.

Typical Applications

  • Pumps & valves – metering, dosing, and control diaphragms (see our rubber seals range).
  • Automotive – fuel, emission, and brake-system actuators (see EPDM automotive seals).
  • Medical & analytical – peristaltic pump and respiration diaphragms (see medical silicone components).
  • HVAC & appliances – pressure-switch and damper elements.

Manufacturing

Diaphragms are typically die-cut from calendered sheet, dip-molded, or compression-molded with inserted reinforcement. We support prototype to production volumes and overmold metal inserts—see compression vs injection molding for process guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a flat and a convoluted diaphragm?

A flat diaphragm seals with minimal movement; a convoluted (rolling) diaphragm accommodates long, low-friction strokes, making it ideal for actuators and accumulators.

Which material is best for a fuel-pump diaphragm?

NBR and FKM are common for fuel contact; FKM is chosen when higher temperature or aggressive additives are present.

Can diaphragms be reinforced?

Yes. Fabric inserts (nylon, polyester, aramid) and bonded metal plates raise burst strength and control stroke; we select reinforcement by pressure and cycle life.

Do you make medical-grade diaphragms?

Yes—platinum-cure silicone and USP Class VI compounds are available for peristaltic and respiratory applications.
