In semiconductor fabs, a single particle or extractable outgassed from a seal can ruin a wafer batch worth thousands of dollars. Semiconductor rubber seals therefore must meet cleanroom, ultra-low-outgassing, and broad-chemical-resistance requirements that ordinary industrial elastomers cannot. This guide covers which materials to specify for wet benches, CMP, etch, and fluid-handling seals—and how to qualify them. For related high-purity molding, see our LSR parts and molded rubber components pages.
| Material | Strengths | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| FFKM (perfluoroelastomer) | Broadest chemical resistance, high temp, lowest extractables | Etch, CMP, plasma, aggressive solvents |
| FKM / Viton® | Good chemical & heat, lower cost than FFKM | General wet-bench and pump seals |
| EPDM | Steam, deionized water, ozone | UPW and cleaning loops |
| Silicone (platinum LSR) | High purity, low extractables, flexibility | Peristaltic and fluid-transfer seals |
| PTFE-encapsulated | Chemical inertness with elastic core | Static flanges in aggressive lines |
Material trade-offs are detailed in our FKM vs Viton vs FPM and silicone rubber complete guide.
Compression set from prolonged heat, swelling from incompatible solvents, and particle generation from torn or improperly cleaned seals are the top causes of unplanned tool downtime. Selecting the right fluorine content and cure system—covered in our FKM grades guide—prevents most issues.
